Eating Locally at Marrow & Spice

As a local food destination, Marrow and Spice is always on the prowl for new local producers of quality products. At the 9th annual “Living Locally” fair in Russell last Saturday, we were introduced to a local baker who works out of Lancaster.

Jim (in photo left, with Roger) has been baking professionally for 8 years after enjoying other vocations, and we are excited to be able to offer his cakes, cookies, tarts, squares, loaves, and pies on a weekly basis. Jim bakes the way his mother baked decades ago and uses no artificial ingredients, just good, old-fashioned, recipes made in small batches. We can also custom order baked goods for you and have them in the store for pick up within a couple of days! Roger will continue to make his famous tourtieres, meat pot pies, and GF items in the store, but with Jim’s Homestyle Bakery’s extra production space, we will be able to feature greater numbers of other baked items on a regular basis as well!

If you are a tea drinker, come into the store and witness the variety of interesting teas that we carry, from Diversitea in Gloucester and Crave Tea in Cornwall. These two suppliers offer such a wide variety of teas, including organic and fair trade that it is hard to believe! Black, Green, White, Herbal, Fruit, Roobios, Wellness, Matcha, and more. If we do not have a specific type of tea that you like, we can bring in any of the teas that these two local tea merchants create for you.

If coffee is more your cup of tea (yes he DID do that), we carry locally roasted coffees from Poppa Bean Coffee Roastery. Like many local coffee roasters, Paul learned the trade due to his desire for a higher quality of roasted bean for his own coffee, and then expanded into commercial production.

Similar circumstances are what led to the success of Roadapple Ranch Drug-Free meats. Thirty years ago (but who is counting), Mike and Kim started raising their own meat to ensure the highest quality on their table as well as the best treatment possible for the animals. People who came over for dinner were amazed at the taste, and wanted it for their own home. Fast forward a few decades, and you have the Roadapple Ranch of today, raising beef, pork, chicken, honey, and turkey without drugs and in an ethical, sustainable manner. Come into the store and try some of these wonderful foods, and see what all the fuss is about.
Every day at Marrow and Spice, we are cooking from scratch with healthy ingredients, no preservatives or artificial substances, producing entrees and soups to eat in or take out. We are fiercely proud of everything we produce, and cook like we were serving our family. Come and savour the difference!
